Apple has finally released the new Apple watch, the company’s first new product since the iPad.
CEO Tim Cook explained that the Apple watch will do much more than just tell the time at the company’s “Spring Forward” event in San Francisco.
The watch is essentially a miniature computer disguised as a watch, with a touchscreen face and a knob on the side used to navigate the device.
Connecting the watch to an iPhone with Bluetooth enables the device to access even more features.
Emails and notifications can be received, as well as phone calls answered and messages sent back and forth.
“It’s the most personal device we’ve ever created,” said Cook.
The resting screen on the watch is a clock, which has many different designs and can be customized based on preference.
The Apple Watch is also heavily concerned with fitness and living a healthy lifestyle.
The watch keeps tabs on the users movements, sending updates about activity and offers suggestions on how to meet calorie loss targets.
Cook explained the watch will have 18 hours of battery life, leading to some criticism because it does not leave time for sleep pattern tracking, which most competitors offer in their fitness bands.
“I am interested in the Apple watch. It seems like a really convenient way to easily bring all of the features I like about my phone with me when I work out without the bulkiness of an actual cellphone,” said senior Casey Schieda.
The watches do not come cheap, however, with a starting price of $349.
There are three different collections: Apple Watch, Apple Watch Sport, and Apple Watch Edition.
Apple Watch, the most conservative of the three collections, features a range of stainless steel and leather bands with a “sapphire crystal” glass screen (whatever that means).
Apple Watch Sport was designed with durability in mind. The flexible bands are offered in brighter, more fun colors, and the case itself is made out of aluminum in order to keep the device lightweight for exercising.
Apple Watch Edition is pure luxury (Seriously, we’re talking $10,000.). The cases are crafted out of 18-karat yellow and rose gold, with leather bands in an array of different colors.
“I think the Apple Watch Edition collection is a little over the top. No one will actually be able to afford these prices, unless they are a Kardashian. I think the Apple Watch Sport collection is the most appealing – not only because it is the least expensive, but also because it is lightweight and perfect for exercising,” said senior Kate Broskie.
What sets the Apple watch apart from similar wearable tech devices is that it is truly made only for quick glances.
It was reported that Apple asked developers to design apps that can only be used for 10 seconds at a time.
Because push notifications are predetermined, users can choose who they really want to be contacted by.
But will the new watch be worth the price? Only time will tell (I’m sorry, I couldn’t resist)!
