Karl Anthony Towns Unanimously Wins Rookie of The Year Award

Karl Anthony Towns was selected first overall in the 2015 NBA draft after his impressive performances in the University of Kentucky. Towns a New Jersey native showed great potential at St. Josephs School and still is showing potential with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Towns joins Lebron James, Kyrie Irving , and teammate Andrew Wiggins who won the prestigious award as the first overall pick. Towns was honored to receive such award knowing that many great players before him received the award.

Junior Aiden Hochrun said, ” Karl Anthony Towns is a great player who is a rising star in the game of basketball. He is a rookie with lots of potential and is very thrilling to watch.”

Towns becomes the fifth player to win the award Unanimously joining Damian Lillard , Hall of Famer David Robinson, Blake Griffin and Ralph Sampson. Towns received all 130 first place votes from league officials and coaches.

Towns in his Presentation speech said, ” This is not an award won by one person but by a team and their organization. I’d like to thank the Timberwolves organization and Flip Saunders. I love that I get to wake up everyday and get to be a part of the Minnesota Timberwolves. I’m thankful for the opportunities that they give to me and will continue to work hard and push myself.”

“I would love to thank my sister who took her time out of each day to play me. I’d also like to thank my wonderful parents who raised me and taught me valuable lessons that I can take with me not only in my career but in my life. Without your support I would not be where I am now.”

” I am blessed to have my fans but I am most thankful that I have my family who supports me and will be there for me. I can honestly say that when I look in my fathers eyes I know that he is proud of me.

Though Towns won the award unanimously and had an impressive first year in the league. There were many who thought Kristaps Porzingis of the New York Knicks won had won the award despite his season ending injury in late April.

In his first year in the league Towns scored 18.3 points per game with 2.0 assists per game and 10.5 rebounds per game. Towns was able to lead the Timberwolves past the highly regarded Golden State Warriors in an upset victory. Towns led all rookies in points with 18.3 points per game and rebounds with 10.5.

During the all star break it was Towns who surprised many in the rookie skills many. Towns was able to beat Draymond Green in the first round and Demarcus Cousins in the second round. Towns was able to upset Isiah Thomas for the win.

Junior Aman Patel said, ” It was shocking to see Towns win the competition and be able to knock off some tough competition in Dreymond Green and Demarcus Cousins. I’m excited to see more of  him and what he can bring to the table.”

Many say that the Minnesota Timberwolves have a very bright future with rising stars such as two time dunk contest champion Zach Levine and first overall pick Andrew Wiggins. Veterans like Ricky Rubio and future hall of famer Kevin Garnett are paving the way for rookies.

Though there is a very promising future with players such as Levine,Towns and Wiggins it should be noted that changes should and are being made within the organization. Recently the Timberwolves have hired a new coach in Tom Thibodeau formerly of the Chicago Bulls. Thibodeau also became the president of basketball operations for the organization.

What else is in store for Karl Anthony Towns in his career? Can Towns live up to  the expectations set by in the media? What else can the Timberwolves do to help Towns develop into a superstar.
